Commute Fuel Cost & Vehicle Replacement Analysis
Date: May 2026
Context: 2010 Lexus GX at 216K miles, evaluating replacement options
1. Current Situation
- Vehicle: 2010 Lexus GX, 216K miles
- Fuel: Premium, ~$6.50/gallon (CA, Iran war spike)
- Efficiency: 15 mpg
- Commute: 30 miles each way, 60 miles/day, ~250 days/year
Rule of thumb: fuel price per gallon ≈ annual cost in dollars — works when miles/year ÷ mpg ≈ 1,000 gallons. Holds exactly here: 15,000 mi ÷ 15 mpg = 1,000 gal × $6.50 = $6,500/year.
2. Recommendation
Keep the GX. Buy a RAV4 PHEV as the daily commuter.
- GX handles off-road and towing (rarely needed but important)
- RAV4 PHEV covers the commute near-electrically
- 52-mile EV range covers each 30-mile leg fully on electric
- With home charge + subsidized work charge: commute runs entirely electric
- Avoids two-car inconvenience while capturing most EV efficiency gains
3. Detail
Why the GX stays
- 216K miles = replacement is rational, but GX is body-on-frame with real off-road capability (locking rear diff, low range, KDSS)
- Off-road camping and 2K towing are occasional but important use cases
- No crossover/unibody replaces this without significant capability loss
Vehicles evaluated
| Vehicle | MSRP | MPG | Towing | Off-road | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Highlander Hybrid | ~$47,600 | 36 | 3,500 lbs | ❌ Unibody | Fails capability test |
| 4Runner Hybrid | ~$43,065 | 23 | 6,000 lbs | ✅ Body-on-frame | GX like-for-like replacement |
| Land Cruiser | ~$57,200 | 22 | 6,000 lbs | ✅ Body-on-frame | Same powertrain as 4Runner, +$14K |
| RAV4 Hybrid | ~$33,000 | 43 | — | ❌ Unibody | Good commuter, no plug |
| RAV4 PHEV | ~$41,500 | 41 / 107 MPGe | — | ❌ Unibody | Best commuter |
RAV4 PHEV commute math
- EV range: 52 miles (SE/XSE trim)
- Commute: 30 miles each way — fits within EV range each leg
- Home charge overnight (120V sufficient, ~12 hrs): covers morning leg
- Work charge (subsidized ~$0.15/kWh): covers evening leg
| Scenario | Daily cost | Annual cost | Annual savings vs GX |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current GX | $26.00 | $6,500 | — |
| RAV4 Hybrid (gas) | $8.37 | $2,093 | $4,407 |
| RAV4 PHEV (both charges) | $4.21 | $1,053 | $5,447 |
Payback: PHEV premium over Hybrid
- Price delta: ~$8,500
- Annual savings delta: $5,447 − $2,093 = $3,354/yr
- Payback: ~2.5 years — especially strong given subsidized work charging
Home charger
Probably not needed. 120V overnight is sufficient for 52-mile battery. Saves ~$1,200 install cost.
CA electricity rate (May 2026)
~$0.34/kWh residential. Work charger assumed ~$0.15/kWh (subsidized).
Gas price note
Current CA premium prices elevated by 2026 Iran war / Strait of Hormuz disruption. Baseline CA premium was ~$5.50 pre-conflict. Analysis holds at lower prices; savings shrink slightly.
If replacing the GX for capability
- 4Runner Hybrid is the rational call — same i-FORCE MAX powertrain as Land Cruiser, 23 mpg, 6,000 lb tow, $14K less
- Land Cruiser is the fun/prestige call — justified if you want it, hard to justify on economics alone
