Part of the 2026-07 Colorado — July 18–26.
I also made it out to Tin Cup which was more of a cabin community than a ghost town, though it was a pretty drive. Saw lots of cows and about a dozen deer today.
I had brisket for lunch — which was good, but not excessive — rice and beans and pickles and a cheesy biscuit. Bagel with sausage and egg for breakfast. Diet Coke from the Tin Cup store. And I drove to Crested Butte, but didn’t get out of the car and barely slowed down before turning around.
As the rain started, I tried to follow a dirt road from near Gunnison airport to Aberdeen Quarry — BLM Road 5550. It was bad. I made it about 1/4 mile, turned on x mode, changed my mind and backed down and out. A few lightning bolts helped convince me. Glad I had good camera and could back it out without going into a ravine. I think my truck would have had no problem but there’s always the chance of a flat tire. Really this was an ATV or SxS road. A lot of the side by sides out here, and they’re a hell of a machine.
Several fire staging areas nearby — helicopters near Gunnison airport, camp near Cimarron. Not sure what fire they’re serving, I was tempted to drive in and see how they were organized.
Some pretty driving. Got out and took a walk at a dam — Mesa Creek near Cimarron — nice little stroll. Got a little lost finding the resort — and then found my way to the bar before checking in. Seems like a friendly remote place.
I read that green chili is the food most associated with Colorado. I guess New Mexico must be red and green?
“It’s a different environment up here, and we don’t know what they want.” Apparently building permit approvals are a point of contention. Lots of log cabins. And I’ve been taking lots of photos of ranch entry gates. Lots of photos, including those, that I’m likely to discard. But maybe there will be a few.
Took a bit of a walk around the Nordic course at Arrowhead — the beginner one, through the trees, I guess. Would be nice to do the Nordic in the winter — I guess you’d need to rent skis somewhere.
“I heard you’ve got a massive deck!”
