In Baja with the Jeep CJ5. A day or two before the mud flat, I got stuck below the tideline — got the 4WD locked in time, crawled out before the water came up. Filed it under “fine” and kept going.

Then the mud flat.

Two vehicles, both stuck to the diffs. Not soft sand — a tidal flat that looked drivable and wasn’t. Friends were there, which meant some of them helped and some of them played in the mud, because that’s what you do when you’re not the one stuck.

We got them out with 1x8 boards: slide them under the tires, give the wheels something to push against that isn’t just more mud.

The tide didn’t get us.
