Minsoo's Twenty-Year-Old Body

“You know, I may be 30, but I have the body of a 20-year-old. If the police find it I’m in big trouble.”

That’s Minsoo. The photos from this era — early 1990s, Los Angeles, before anyone had a plan for where they were going — are full of him. Black blazer over skeleton-print shirt, looking directly at the camera. All black, all the time, because that way he didn’t have to think about his clothes. Standing in front of an “AMERICA GIFT” store, deadpan.

In some ways he was an early Sheldon Cooper-style intellectual. Or more likely, they were both styled after earlier academics — the type who decides, once, that the social overhead of coordinating outfits is not worth the processing cycles, and commits to a uniform.

He delivered it without any pause before “If the police find it.”

I’ve remembered it for thirty years.
