The domain, and the philosophy.

My domain is obtainium.org. I’ve had it since June 2002, when it was available.

Obtainium is an unofficial unit of currency in the maker world, representing materials and components obtained for free or nearly free — salvage, found objects, surplus, things people were throwing away. A Jacob’s ladder built from surplus capacitors and a transformer someone left on the curb is obtainium. A CNC router built from a broken laser cutter is obtainium. The practice of acquiring useful things cheaply from the waste stream of other people’s projects.

I’ve always been oriented toward this. Free televisions that need one fix. Surplus electronics from the Apex yard. The Craigslist Range Rover with 110,000 miles that’s an incredible bargain if you can fix the thing that’s wrong with it.

The appeal isn’t just financial. It’s something about understanding what something actually is — what it was built for, how it works, what it can do — when you have to work to get it rather than just buying the new version. You learn more from the broken thing than from the thing that works.

Also, honestly, the financial part is real. I have spent a lot of money on Land Rovers over the years. Every dollar saved on something else is another dollar available for Land Rover service.

Obtainium.org has been my home on the web for over twenty years. The philosophy holds up.
