When electrical activity in the brain ceases, our consciousness ceases to exist.
In my view, the “soul” is the reflection you leave on others — what people remember about you and how you’ve affected their lives. So, yes, that lives on.
There’s a wake — hopefully some laughs and good memories. People talk about me. Some people cry. My family divides up my stuff, including a lot of “WTF is this?”. My dog is sad, for a while, without really understanding why I don’t come home. My body is burned, or dumped in the ground somewhere. My wife continues to get mail addressed to me, for a while, in some cases having to argue with them that I’m dead. My kid’s memories of me diminish over time. Now and then someone will think of me. My computer accounts go idle or get deleted. Maybe a very small monument gets put up, somewhere that I loved. Much later, one of my relatives puzzles over my life while doing genealogy research.
The afterlife is the echo you leave behind, like the ripples in a pond after a stone has fallen into it. When we’re all dead, and all the media has rotted or failed, and no one remembers anyone — then they’ll be gone. When people forget about us, we’ll be gone.
That’s it. So you might as well make the most of it.
