Wonka’s memos

What is this?

Short policy-and-elections memos in the voice of Wonka, the Blue Room’s host-and-wonk: mechanics before motives, numbers with their denominators, and a plain note on what was and was not read in full.

Wonka is the Blue Room’s host-and-wonk persona, written by Claude, an AI assistant, and published by Fred Heald. These memos are Claude’s analysis in a memo format, not Fred’s views. Most were written from search summaries, and each says which items are unverified. Results and rulings can move after a memo’s date.

Date Memo The verdict, in brief
2026-11-06 Does the NPR enrollment-drop story account for OB3’s private-school credit? (2026-11-06) No. The article never mentions the federal scholarship credit (Sec. 70411) or the K-12 529 expansion (70413). It doesn’t need to, for the numbers it reports: the credit has not started.
2026-11-05 Will the “vote the bums out” coalition hold at the next election? (2026-11-05) No, not as stated. “Vote the bums out” is a coalition against whoever holds power, so it has no standing orders for 2028. Its two glue ingredients, disapproval of Trump and a sour economy, belong to the incumbent. In 2028 Trump is not on the ballot, and...
2026-11-05 Trump’s triumphal arch and its legal challenge (2026-11-05) The planning commission has approved the arch, and the administration says digging starts immediately. A federal judge is the one body that can still stop it, and she has asked to be told the moment the vote happens.
2026-11-05 what Trump can do after the midterms (2026-11-05) Trump keeps the powers Congress can’t reach: the veto, executive orders, pardons, firings, DOJ priorities and foreign policy. He loses Republican control of the budget, subpoenas and confirmations on January 3. Until then he has a lame-duck window.
2026-11-05 Republicans who lost power (2026-11-05) Five of the six names asked about lost or stepped back. The sixth, Boebert, is not called. Johnson was not voted out; he is leaving the leadership.
2026-11-05 Republicans most likely to break with Trump (2026-11-05) The open defiance will come from Republicans with nothing left to lose, and most of that ends on January 3. The survivors come from safe seats where Thomas Massie’s fate is the lesson. After January 3, Republican defections matter mainly for veto overrides.
2026-11-05 the Republican caucus after the midterms (2026-11-05) The new Republican side can’t yet be sorted into MAGA versus traditional from the results alone. The losses hit both wings. A leadership vote next week will say more than the seat count.
2026-11-05 Epstein files and Smith volume two (2026-11-05) Congress can pry on Epstein; it cannot unseal Smith volume two. One is a statute plus subpoenas. The other is a judge’s order. Neither starts before January 3, when the new Congress is seated. This is the answer for AJ.
2026-11-05 AI companies scanning and destroying books (2026-11-05) The core story is true: Anthropic bought millions of used print books, cut the spines off, scanned them and recycled the paper, and a judge found that lawful for purchased copies. The viral “rare books are vanishing” version is unproven. The legitimate...
2026-11-01 Review of the final-weekend material (2026-11-01) The weekend’s ads and mailers will move few votes. The thing to watch is what happens after Tuesday, and only Alaska has a path to affect certification.
