1985 Tulsa with Nicholas

Summer 1985. Fred and Nicholas drove from El Centro to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to visit Rich Holly.

Route: El Centro → Phoenix (dinner at John Clements’ house) → Tombstone, AZ → Las Cruces, NM (a cockroach-infested motel; Nicholas lost his wallet in El Paso) → White Sands → Carlsbad Caverns (bat campground) → Amarillo (dinner at the Big Texan — did not take on the 72-oz steak) → Tulsa.

Highlights: Rich’s 1961 Ford Falcon caught fire at the post office. Fred hit an unidentified animal on the road near Carlsbad Caverns. Total distance: roughly 2,700 miles.
