~1988–1991

The Range Rover had twin Solex carburetors. I had replaced one of them with an injector carb, which worked better. Until the upside-down incident.

I rolled it on a dirt road in the dark. That kind of thing can happen to anyone. I rolled it back upright, drove it home, cut the roof off, and had a roll cage professionally welded in. Then I drove it from Denver to Moab, which is roughly 350 miles.

Then it threw a piston through the bottom of the engine on I-70 between Green River and Salina. That’s 110 miles of nothing in either direction, which I believe is the longest stretch of nothing between two towns in Utah that aren’t themselves much.

Lesson I should have applied sooner: if you turn a car upside down, blow out the cylinders before you start it. Oil leaks down into them. The results are eventually explosive.
