Double Eagle Resort and Spa, June Lake, California. Rated ★★★★☆

Second visit for massages. The grounds are truly beautiful — set up against the mountain with a stocked fishing pond. They were doing a Tai Chi class on the deck, despite the mosquitoes.

The massage was superb, one of the best I’ve had, and the staff are professional and friendly. The locker room, sauna, and hot tub were clean and comfortable. I personally liked the tacky “miner” decorations — the Eastern Sierra doesn’t need to apologize for its Gold Rush aesthetic.

I plan to make this a standard midway stop on the way back from Burning Man. The location is essentially perfect for that: you’ve just been on the playa for a week, you’re covered in dust, and the idea of a hot tub and a shower and a massage is exactly what the situation calls for. The price for a day pass is reasonable enough to count as Burning Man recovery infrastructure.

Wanted to try the restaurant this visit but they weren’t serving lunch for another hour. That’s on my list for next time.

The Eastern Sierra in late summer, after the burn, is one of the best drives in California. The altitude is right, the light is right, the crowds have mostly thinned.

I didn’t make it there in 2022. Next time.
