If money were not an issue: Mercedes Unimog. I don’t need Gofast. I don’t need Goanywhere either, but if money were not an issue that’s what I’d choose.
Further into fantasy: TPZ Fuchs armored personnel carrier. Six-wheel drive. Nuclear, biological, chemical warfare resistant. 0–60 in who cares, it’s bad ass. I’d get the double-cabin version — the Doka — room for the whole family, enough space in the back for anything I want. Virtually unstoppable off-road. Parking would be difficult, but it would be worth it to have this as my daily driver. Very little practical benefit, but utterly bad-ass. And in the meanwhile, it’d still be fun for trips to Home Depot, or dropping my kid off at elementary school.
If I’m throwing in aircraft: Sikorsky S-38 “The Explorer’s Air Yacht.” Twin engine amphibian, very lightweight, designed and built for exploring the far reaches of the globe in the golden age of flight. Take off and land nearly anywhere. Fair amount of carrying capacity. Wicker seats. I could get the Grumman Albatross instead, and I’ve actually ridden in one, but the S-38 has a romance to it that’s hard to beat. Howard Hughes flew Katherine Hepburn in one. That’s the kind of thing I think about.
For realistic daily use, I’ve been back and forth between a Subaru Forester (great mileage, handles everything) and a Lexus GX (better off-road, worse mileage). Neither one is what I’m looking for in a vehicle. Neither one is a Unimog.
I like lots of vehicles. I have not owned enough of them. I still miss the Haflinger.
