I was young and foolish, and had Land Rover fever. I bought an old 1960s Land Rover from a junkyard “restorer.” He promised and contracted to repair it with new parts, update the engine, give it a paint job, replace the upholstery — to restore it, in other words. I put down a deposit.
After months, he finally contacted me to tell me it was ready. In the meantime I’d looked at a lot of other vehicles, and met a Land Rover service person, who I took with me. We inspected the vehicle, and it was awful. It was painted, and from the outside it looked okay, but the interior was mixed broken old used bits, and the engine was worse — the engine mounts had been removed and re-welded to fit a nonstandard engine.
I refused it, and eventually he sold it, and I got the deposit back.
The day I met him, he’d shown me a 101 Forward Control. I should have talked him into selling me that one, as is, instead.
