June 2, 1923 – April 10, 1992. Son of Judge Elmer Wilson Heald and Gagalene; Gramp's half-brother.

He was born in San Bernardino in the summer of 1923. Both mother and baby were healthy going in. Gagalene went into labor on a Friday night, and there were no doctors on staff until Monday β€” only interns. During the delivery he was deprived of oxygen long enough to cause permanent, moderate brain damage. A century ago there was nothing to be done about it; the path that followed was the usual one for the time β€” care, supervision, medication.

Fred remembers him from holidays, when the family gathered at Christmas and Easter. He loved opening presents. He loved hunting Easter eggs. When he got too excited, Gagalene would hush him. He lived among two very strong personalities β€” his father the judge, his mother formidable and difficult β€” in a household that was not a gentle one.

His half-brother Gramp carried him quietly for a lifetime: not from any lack of love, but from the pressure a capable man feels to make up for what a brother can’t be. Gramp loved him.

He lived to sixty-eight and died in Torrance, at the Los Angeles end of the family, far from the Imperial Valley where he’d grown up.
