From photo batch review, May 2026. A backpacking trip to Three Rivers.
Gary Wong had the only map.
Every time we asked how much farther, he’d say “just up ahead!” and laugh demonically. This became the pattern: we’d ask, he’d say “just up ahead,” we’d keep walking.
The crew: Ken Little, Chris Hubbard, Karen, Todd Mansbridge, Gary Wong, me.
The midpoint was a nice campsite by a stream. That was the good news. The top point was an alpine lake with tiny trout — where I got altitude sickness, which was less good. By the time we got back to the cars, the wires had been badly chewed by marmots. The marmots had been busy while Gary led us to the lake.
Still worth it. Gary knew where the lake was. He just didn’t tell us how far it was, every time we asked, for the entire day.
