Carlsbad Pizza Port, sitting with the journal.

β€œMy entire life is work and computers, with some computers for fun. And when I take off from work, I go computer shopping.”

I wrote this about myself in June 1999, sitting at the Carlsbad Pizza Port with a Guinness and a journal. I was being mildly self-critical about it. Looking back, I’m not sure it was entirely a problem.

I had, at the time, five computers in various states of use: a Powerbook, a Newton, an HP200LX palmtop, an HP800CT, and a Pavilion. I was carrying one or more of them to work every day. I was considering upgrading my home setup and adding a flat-screen monitor. I was running Personal Oracle on the Mac as a β€œhalf-assed solution.”

β€œI’m a freaking nerd and a half,” I wrote. Also accurate.
