Wading out through chest-high water, shuffling my feet like you’re supposed to. A small wave picked me up; when I came back down, a ray had swum under my foot. I was stung. It hurt like hell. The lifeguards used very hot water to ease the toxin — that’s the treatment. No stitches required.

I’m more careful now, and I always start swimming once the water’s high enough. But I could easily get stung again.
