Postcard from Todd Mansbridge to Fred, November 1988. Front: van Gogh’s “Boots with Laces” (Schoenen met veters), Paris 1886, from the van Gogh Museum Amsterdam. Todd’s commentary on the shoes begins in the margin.
I REALLY THINK THIS SHOE THING IS A BAD REP BUT IT’S STUCK IN MY MIND AS WELL AS HUBBARDS.
Todd was still in London that fall, working at ANZ Bank. But for Thanksgiving, Dave Greensfelder and Mike Cunningham and Leslie came over from the States and wanted to go to Amsterdam — so Todd and Ken Little got dragged along. Literally out of bed, he said. But great fun.
He picked the van Gogh museum shoes card, then spent the first line defending the choice. That’s Todd.
He was almost ready to come home. He wanted to know why I hadn’t been writing — a fair complaint — and whether I’d kept tabs on Min Soo. That was the same postcard where he routed the Min Soo note through my P.O. Box.
Not long after this, he was back in California.
