I’m a web developer. Up till recently I’d been doing development on a MAMP (Mac, Apache, MySQL, PHP) system that ran native on my Mac, then pushing the files up to a Linux web host. More recently I’ve started using Docker, which seems to work even better. Yes, these things will work on Windows, but in my experience they’re not as flawless or native.

I like Unix-style command line tools like grep and rsync, especially since my web hosts are Linux servers.

I have never had to deal with a virus. It’s not that there’s no such thing on the Mac — they are theoretically possible, and someday there may be a bad one — but in my 20+ years of extensive Mac use I’ve never personally run into one.

As a web developer, the biggest reason I despise Windows is Internet Explorer — especially IE6. It made my life hell for years, because things would work right everywhere else but require workarounds to work right on IE. These days Safari is arguably worse than other browsers, but nothing is as bad as IE6 was.

I’m happy to use Linux or other Unix on a server. On my desktop, I’ve never liked the Linux GUI — not only the features, which can be changed, but the lack of standards and even the way the mouse pointer moves. I like using well-tested mainstream software; much Linux GUI software just feels sub-par.

So: Mac. Every time.
