Winchester Mystery House, San Jose. Rated ★★★★☆
I think I was last here about 40 years ago, as a kid. Admission was expensive — but the place takes a lot of upkeep. We arrived early, and walked around the grounds taking photos, which aren’t allowed inside. I recommend spending extra time in the gardens, not in the abundant and unavoidable gift shop! Our tour guide was new, but knew her bit, and answered questions well, or made stuff up, I couldn’t tell. The house was less “mysterious” than I remember, but the architecture was more fascinating (now that I’m not a kid, but I am a homeowner!). Maybe they used to make a bigger deal of the occult or strange elements. I really liked the easy riser stairs — not least of all because my legs were hurting. But it’s not air conditioned, so keep that in mind if it’s a warm day. While you’re here, you should also visit WeirdStuff Warehouse and the Mystery Spot.
