Bali Hai, Shelter Island, San Diego. Rated ★★★★☆

If you’re a tiki fan, or a San Diegan, you need to go here just for the experience. San Diego has a long history with tiki and tropical appropriation since WW2, and this place has been one of the “anchors” for that. I am a huge tiki junkie, I’m trying to learn how to make the drinks, and whenever I can I try to find an authentic experience. The location is amazing, and the views from the bar are worth a large part of the price of admission. I dropped in by myself one afternoon and got a spot at a cocktail table next to the window. I ordered “Mr. Bali Hai”, got to have that one at least once. It was large and tasty — not as subtle as some other beverage-specialty bars but it was a great choice. If I’d stayed longer I’d have had a mai tai, the best drink I believe to judge a tiki bar. I also had the calamari appetizer which was inexpensive (happy hour prices), generous and delicious. More than enough for two people. Spend some time appreciating the history on the walls above the staircase. Take home a mug, or stop at the gift shop if it’s open. Take a nice walk on Shelter Island, drive down to the other end and check out the Japanese Friendship Bell.
