Strong Water, Anaheim. Rated ★★★★★
This wasn’t what I was expecting — it was better! I came by myself on a Saturday afternoon and was able to get a seat at the bar. Got the nickel tour from the door host — cute jokes, though it seems he’s done the schtick a dozen times that day. The decor is fabulous pirate ship interior, with lots of little hidden jokes — I caught some references to an attraction at a nearby theme park. I’m here for the atmosphere, but I’m also here for the adult beverages. They have classic tiki, and originals, I had one of each. Three Dots and a Dash was spot on and delicious, served in a tall flute. The Zombie King was nicely spiced and sweet, in a mug that begged me to take him home — next time. Great choices of rum, some of which I’ve had before, well balanced flavors. Both of these were intentionally sweet — if you have a flavor preference I’m sure they could accommodate. The bartender was straw tasting each one — he winked and told me “Best part of the job!” The staff are, if anything, over friendly. Every one I spoke with was great, seemed like they were really wanting me to have a good experience. I hope now and then they get to be salty too. My server suggested the braised short rib, curry flavored, served over mashed potato, which was perfect fall apart stick to your fork. I followed that with the deviled eggs to balance the alcohol a little. They are very clear about possible allergy ingredients — which items have nuts or shellfish or dairy. If you don’t think you’ve quite had the experience, after a few drinks visit the bathrooms. Lock the door — and if you can’t get out, you brought it on yourself. Think of it as a bonus “escape room”!
