It’s been about twenty years since I’ve been to Trop Mex. I’m still giving it five stars just for the memories.
I went to college at Pomona College, and high school at Webb. At some point we “discovered” this place — which was much smaller back then. Great place to take the parents for some local flavor. Also a great destination for a mini-road trip out of wherever you happened to be.
I grew up in El Centro, and the food at Tropical Mexico is the closest I’ve ever found to Camacho’s in terms of quality and taste. That’s high praise. Most Mexican food in Southern California disappoints me, because I’ve been spoiled.
I don’t trust any place that’s reviewed as having “giant margaritas” — but as I recall they do in fact have giant margaritas, and they’re great. So I’ll make an exception.
Don’t forget to stop and take a picture of the “Hand (job) Car Wash” on your way. That sign has been delighting people for decades and I hope it never changes.
Need to stop back sometime. But that would mean I’d have to go back to Pomona.
