The Blue Room — Episode 7: The Day After, Our Panel Predicts
Wonka Good evening, and welcome to the Blue Room. Tonight we play a game, which is a polite way of being wrong in public. [applause]
- Walt Dunning, the retired actuary, has priced the election and would like it noted that he charged for the hours.
- Dale Truitt has a map of Tuesday and has marked the exits. [laughter]
- Margo Bell has three versions of tomorrow’s headline and has circled the one she’s hoping to use.
- Shelby Spinner, a red-hat regular, has brought an electoral map and a pen she refuses to cap. [laughter, a few groans]
- And our guest chair, Hector Almeida, spent twenty years as a state elections director, where he learned that the most dangerous words in an election are “it’ll be quick.” [applause]
Wonka Tonight’s subject has four doors: Election Day, election night, the day after, and the next two years. First a game, then predictions, then the ledger. A few slides first.
1. Election Day. Tuesday, Nov 3. [1]
2. Election night. Pennsylvania and Wisconsin count late, with a blue-shift risk. Michigan pre-counts. Arizona and Nevada take days, California weeks, and Alaska about two weeks. [2]
3. The day after. County certification runs from Nov 9 (Georgia) through Dec 3 (California). Every county that has refused to certify since 2020 ended up certifying. [3]
4. The next two years. The new Congress convenes Jan 3, 2027. Democrats say they’d subpoena DOJ’s leadership on day one if they win the House. [4]
5. The odds. Senate: most likely 51–52 Democratic, Democrats favored about 60–75%. House: about 224–240 Democratic. [5]
Wonka Round one is called Bluff the Count. I’ll read you three things about election night. One is true. Two are lies I made up in a hurry. Dale, you first.
Wonka Door A: “Alaska’s ranked-choice count will take about two weeks to finish.” Door B: “At least one county will announce its results by carrier pigeon, and the pigeon will be certified.” Door C: “Nevada will count its mail ballots on the floor of a casino.”
Dale I’m keeping an open mind about the pigeon. I’ve heard stories. [laughter]
Walt It’s A. The tracker has Alaska at about two weeks. In 2024 the AP called its House seat on November 20.
Shelby C. It’s Vegas, Wonka. Everything in Vegas is on a casino floor. [laughter]
Wonka Walt wins. A is true. B and C are lies, and I’m a little proud of the pigeon. Shelby loses, and I’m saying that with love.
Shelby I’d like a recount. [laughter, applause]
Wonka Round two, predictions. Door one, Election Day. Walt.
Walt At 2 a.m. some county will announce its final results, and at 4 a.m. someone will find a box of ballots in a closet. It will be a bipartisan embarrassment and a Wednesday headline. It will turn out to be a box that was always scheduled to be counted. [laughter]
Hector That’s accurate in a way I wish it weren’t. I’d underline “scheduled.” The box is almost never a plot. It’s almost always a box.
Wonka Door two, election night. Margo.
Margo Here’s how it goes. Step one: Georgia, North Carolina, Texas and Florida count fast, and by midnight you know a lot. Step two: Pennsylvania and Wisconsin count mail late, so the early picture shifts. Step three: Michigan may not be called until Wednesday. Step four: Alaska takes two weeks. So my prediction: a cable chyron will say “TOO CLOSE TO CALL” for a period of time that violates the Geneva Conventions. [laughter]
Dale Before the West Coast polls close, three people will say the count is rigged. Two of them will be winning. [a few groans, a few cheers]
Wonka New rule: if you say the count is rigged before the count is finished, you should have to say which count. [laughter]
Shelby And as a mom, I’d just like everyone to go to bed Tuesday night, be nice to the poll workers, and wait for the count.
Wonka That’s the most sensible thing said all evening, and I’ll mark it unscored. [a few cheers]
Wonka Door three, the day after. Shelby, you’ve been vibrating.
Shelby Republicans keep the Senate. And the Democrats will find eleven ways to say they won, even if they lose. [applause, groans]
Margo And the Republicans will find twelve. [laughter]
Wonka The models say Democrats are favored for the Senate, about 60 to 75 percent. Shelby’s reply is that last year’s off-year elections missed toward Republicans, and she’s right. A two-point miss would flip it. Nobody knows, and I’ll put that on a mug.
Hector My prediction is dull, so I’ll make it loud. Every state certifies on time. Two or three counties will hold a very dramatic meeting about not certifying, then certify. The only thing delayed will be the press conference about why they might not.
Dale I’d like to lodge an objection on behalf of excitement.
Wonka Door four, the next two years. Margo.
Margo If Democrats win the House, a subpoena will be served before the furniture arrives. Rep. Garcia has said they’d go after DOJ’s leadership on day one, and Epstein will be on the list, even though it isn’t on the first-hundred-days list.
Dale Shutdown by spring. The word “unprecedented” will be used, and it will mean “same as last time.” [laughter]
Walt Whoever wins, “historic” will appear in four hundred fundraising emails by Thursday.
Wonka And my own. I predict I will be wrong once tonight.
Walt You already were. You said Tuesday was Wednesday.
Wonka Then I’m done for the evening. [laughter, applause]

How we’ll score it: after the count, the callback episode checks each row, marks it Right, Wrong or Not yet, and says what happened. Rows 1–7 can be scored by Nov 20.
Audience reactions
Three people from the audience, asked on the way out. Invented and representative.
- A poll worker in row 3: “The closet box is real. It’s usually the ones that were in the car.”
- A woman near the back: “Every prediction was about process. Nobody said who wins. I can’t tell if that’s wisdom or cowardice.”
- A man by the aisle: “I’d bet the farm on the pigeon.”
Tag: Wonka, to the scoreboard: “I predict I’ll be wrong. I’m also, for the record, a Wednesday person.” Then, quietly: “It’s Sunday.”
Since taping (Wednesday, November 4, morning; search summaries, provisional): Democrats are reported to have won the Senate, about 54 seats, so Shelby’s row 7 looks wrong. Michigan was uncalled at 9 p.m. Pacific and projected by the AP by Wednesday morning, which makes row 5’s Michigan half a loose miss. Alaska is uncalled with about three-quarters counted, so row 1 is on track. Mississippi sat 43 votes apart overnight, so the chyron prediction is looking good. Rows 4, 6 and 8 are unchecked. Next time: the full callback, after the count. Spot an error? The notes below are the place to check it.

The Blue Room is a fictional late-night political talk show, written by Claude, an AI, as political satire. The host and guests are invented comic archetypes, not real people, and nothing a character says is the site author’s opinion. What is documented, disputed or unsupported is sorted at the end of each episode, with sources in the notes. The predictions are the characters’ guesses, made for fun, not forecasts and not voting advice. For how and where to vote, ask your county elections office. Seats: Bill Wonka (host), Shelby Spinner, Walt Dunning, Dale Truitt, Margo Bell; guest chair Hector Almeida (invented former state elections director; his lines rest on the sources below). The predictions are fictional characters’ guesses, not forecasts. Facts come from the election-watch tracker (count timing and key dates), the forecasts, senate and house pages (compiled Oct 24 with updates through Nov 1), and search summaries. Not opened: the primary election calendars and the Detroit News/AP pages.
