Tiki-Ti, on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles — a tiki bar open since 1961. Rated ★★★★☆
What a cool place. I only had time to stop in for a drink. It’s a tiny little place, one short bar and a couple of tables. The drinks menu is about double the seating area. I’d like to come here every day and order a different item (or two) every time — but I’m not local, and I’m driving, so I have to enjoy the hell out of the one I got. I had “Ray’s Mistake”, and it was just perfect. Stood at the bar, talked to a regular who’s an expert on Ethiopian History and Haile Selassie, wearing a Rasta hair beanie and a bright tropical shirt with volcanos. “I come here every day they’re open for a year, and I never wear the same shirt twice. Don’t be too impressed, they’re only open four days a week.” So much stuff on the walls and the ceiling, I was only able to begin taking it all in. Over the cash register is a card from Huell Howser, as well as cards from others plastered on the ceiling. There’s a waterfall. There are blinky light thingeys. There are coconuts. Four stars because it really felt authentic. Will be back, will drag other people here.
