Had the maiden flight of my new plane this afternoon — one fucked-up flight because the elevator was upside down, including a fine inadvertent loop, then two decent flights. The first ended partway down the hill; the other ended smashing against the fence but not quite going onto the road, which would have really really sucked. As it was there seems to be just a bit of repairable damage to the tail boom.
Didn’t get to fly the Zagy because there wasn’t enough wind for it. But I think it should do better now that there’s less weight.
I wrote that off as success enough, stopped at Carlsbad Pizza Port afterward for pizza and a beer, and called it a day.
May 29, 2001. The “Zagy” was a Zagi flying wing — designed for slope soaring, not for calm days. The slope was at the west end of Palomar Airport Road in Carlsbad, out by the coast.
